Top 5 controversial statements made by Gautam Gambhir

Many of these statement didn’t go well with Indian cricket fans.

Gautam Gambhir has been the talk of the town in recent times. Ever since he took the retirement, the Delhi Cricketer has been in the limelight because of his unique and controversial perspective. Gambhir has always raised his voice on the matters which according to him need to be discussed.

However, there have been multiple instances in the recent past, wherein, the Southpaw’s contentious statements have landed him in trouble and different sorts of controversies. He has also often been seen gainsaying his own communique regarding the affairs of the cricketing community. As a result, the cricketer-turned-politician has been facing enormous heat from the aficionados at periodic intervals.

Here, we’ll have a look at some of Gautam Gambhir’s controversial comments

1. “Ambati Rayudu’s exclusion from the team is heartbreaking”

Ambati Rayudu’s exclusion from the Indian squad for 2019 CWC attracted lots of controversies and was in the limelight for a long period of time. His sudden embargo from the team raised many eyebrows all over the world. The former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir had also condemned this move.

“I think there should be no debate about Rishabh Pant’s exclusion but more about Ambati Rayudu. It is very, very unfortunate that someone averaging 48 in white-ball cricket and is only 33 has been left out. That for me is more heartbreaking than any other selection decision,” said Gambhir after Ambati Rayudu failed to make the cut in the World Cup squad.

Moreover, he also went on to say that this was very unfortunate and he could relate this with his own scenario during the 2007 50-over Cricket World. However, this seemed a very idiotic statement, as Gambhir himself, a month ago, wanted Sanju Samson to play at the no. 4 spot during the World Cup.

2. “Ravichandran Ashwin should play at no. 4 in CWC 2019”

Gambhir once also wanted Ravichandran Ashwin to play at no. 4. During the initial phase of 2019, the Southpaw backed the off-spinner to play at the much-talked 4th spot and said that this move will add balance to the team. Ashwin, who has last donned the white-ball jersey in 2017, was later on replaced by the wrist-spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. Although the Tamil Nadu-born’s spin twin Ravindra Jadeja soon made a comeback to the team, Ashwin, on the other hand, never got a chance to return.

Meanwhile, during January 2019, Gambhir once advocated for Ashwin’s place. In a promotional event, he said that the 33-year old should be included in the squad and given a chance to play at no. 4 in the Cricket World Cup 2019. He said, “I think R Ashwin is someone who we should always consider because we are looking at conditions in England during that time of the year. Wickets could be flat and worn out. So a finger-spinner can be effective with the ball as well,”

Nonetheless, a couple of months later, Gambhir took a u-turn from his statement and then presented the name of Sanju Samson for the no. 4 spot. Going further, he also said that Ambati Rayudu would’ve been a better option for the position.

3. “Virat does well as the skipper of the side only because of the presence of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma”

The bitterness of Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir’s relation isn’t hidden from anyone of us. The two have often been seen getting engaged in fights both on and off the field. There have been several instances in the past when Gambhir has made an outrageous communiqué regarding Kohli which has added some more nails to the coffin.

Amid the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Gambhir criticized Virat Kohli’s captaincy once again. Even though most of Kohli’s decisions in the tourney had hitherto been tactically spot on, Gambhir felt that the team was winning only because of Rohit and Dhoni’s presence. He said as quoted by DNA, “Virat Kohli is a good captain for India only because he has MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma behind him. If you are talking about Kohli the captain, he would have won RCB an IPL title since he has taken over the captaincy there. Most of the times his team RCB has finished on number 8.”

For this statement, Gambhir was brutally slammed by all the Kohli fans on Twitter.

4. “Dhoni’s rotation policy was a massive shock”

Gautam Gambhir’s equation with the former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh hasn’t been good either. There have been several instances in the past when the news of rifts between the two have come out. Ever since Gambhir was dropped from the team in 2012, the two have been alleged of having personal differences, although, there has been no official declaration about it.

Howbeit, a year ago, Gauti opened up a bit about the famous incident. He expressed his opinions on MS Dhoni’s rotation policies of 2012. Post his retirement, Gambhir told the media in an interview that he, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag weren’t played together because of their slow fielding. However, later on, Dhoni went on to play all three of them together in the last game of 2012 Tri-Series.

“In the 2012 Tri-series in Australia, Dhoni declared that he can’t play all three (Gambhir, Sachin and Sehwag) of us together as he was looking ahead at the 2015 World Cup. It was a massive shock, I think it would have been a massive shock for any cricketer. I have not heard anyone be told in 2012 that they would never be a part of the 2015 World Cup. I always had the impression that if you keep scoring runs, age is just a number,” said Gambhir while talking about the incident as quoted by India Today.

Nonetheless, this interview turned out to be a rather controversial one as it didn’t go well with the fans. Considering how invaluable this rotation policy has turned out to be for the Indian team, the fans termed Gambhir’s statements holier-than-thou and pious.

5. “Kohli is lucky to continue as the skipper of RCB”

During IPL 2019, Gautam Gambhir once again took a sly dig at Virat Kohli’s captaincy. Kohli, who has been shouldering the mantle of the Royal Challengers Bangalore since 2013, has still not been able to lead the team to the coveted IPL title. Despite having some all-time greats, RCB have never been able to lift the silverware.

As a result, Gambhir took on the RCB skipper and said that he is lucky to be captaining the side for such a long time. He further added that Virat should instead thank the RCB management for continuing with him and not replacing even though he has been able to deliver nothing apart from the wooden spoon.

“He has been part of RCB and captaining RCB for the last seven to eight years and he has been very lucky and should rather thank the franchise that they stuck to him because not many captains have got such a long run where they haven’t won a tournament,” the 37-year old said amid the IPL 12 as quoted by Hindustan Times.

Just like his previous statements, this one too didn’t go well with the fans and they eventually lashed out brutally on Gambhir.

England bowler Saqib Mahmood reveals he was called a terrorist after his visa was turned down for India’s tour.

England bowler Saqib Mahmood was picked for India’s tour earlier this year, but his visa was rejected – leading to several unnecessary accusations.

The 22-year-old revealed that he was called ‘terrorist’ by some people on social media for his failure to represent the nation at the highest level.

“All of a sudden I was being called a terrorist and I had not done anything wrong.

People thought I was plotting something when I was going on a cricket tour. I was getting called not a lot of nice things — I tried to forget about it,” Saqib was quoted saying by TimesNowNews.com.

However, leaving all those claims behind him, Saqib has performed to his fullest by grabbing 42 wickets out in 16 first-class matches at an average of 28. His ability to swivel the ball both ways has earned him a place for the upcoming tour of New Zealand in November.

“All morning I was staring at my phone waiting for it to ring. I ended up getting the call just as I thought it was not coming. It was a great feeling, almost a too-good-to-be-true feeling,” Saqib added.

The 22-year-old is expected to make his debut against the Black Caps as he is named in the T20 and test squad.

Tom Banton, Pat Brown, and Matt Parkinson are the other players to receive debut call-up for the T20 Squad, while Jonny Bairstow has been neglected for his inferior performances of late.

England’s five-match T20I series against New Zealand kicks off on Friday, 1 November, while the Test rubber, which isn’t part of the ICC World Test Championship, starts on 19 November.

Another Lasith Malinga! 17-year-old Sri Lankan pacer picks up 6 wickets for 7 runs in college tournament

Lasith Malinga has been one of the greatest fast bowlers in the history of cricket. He has been instrumental in Sri Lankan cricket’s resurgence in limited-overs cricket recently while being an integral part of their rise in the early 2010s. His ability to bowl deadly Yorkers and lethal slower deliveries has made him a legend in T20 cricket. But it looks like his time in cricket is coming to an end. He has already retired from Test cricket while also hanging up his boots in the 50-over format.

However, it looks like Sri Lankan cricket has unearthed another Malinga in the form of Matheesha Pathirana. 17-year-old pacer has an identical slinging action and is also lethal with his Yorkers. A video of his deadly spell for Trinity College has been going viral on social media where it can be seen that Pathirana is proving a tough nut to crack for the opposing batsmen.

In his debut match for Trinity College itself, the young Sri Lankan pacer rattled the opposition while picking up six wickets for seven runs. Here is a highlight video of Pathirana wrecking havoc in college cricket:CLICK HERE TO WATCH VIDEO
